Detached extracts and observations chiefly on medical and philosophical subjects from modern authors, 1795-1829.

Manuscript notebook containing medical receipts, lists of drugs and herbs, summaries of articles published by medical societies, and other medical information; weather observations from Bombay, Fort William, and a voyage to Europe, 1801-1808; and a few household receipts. Bruce is particularly interested in tropical diseases such as yellow fever and "guinea-worm" (dracunculiasis), but there are also entries on diabetes mellitus, skin inflammations, venereal diseases, and wounds.

Ninian Bruce entered the Army as Assistant Surgeon of the 88th Regiment in 1795 and served in the West Indies, India, Egypt, and the Walcheren Campaign of 1809, rising to the rank of Surgeon. He became ill with what was known as Walcheren Fever, and shortly thereafter was appointed to the Surgency of the Royal Military College at Sandhurst, where he died in 1832 of cholera.
